How to Prep a Charcoal Grill
Whether it’s your first time grilling or you just need a refresher, these easy steps will set you up for success in no time.
What You’ll Need
To make the process flow smoothly, be sure to gather everything on the list below before you get started. And as always, use Kingsford® Charcoal for a great grilling experience.
- Kingsford® Charcoal
- Charcoal Grill
- A Stiff Bristled Wire Brush (or a Ball of Aluminum Foil and Tongs)
- Garbage Bag
- Tongs
- Paper Towels
- Matches or Lighter
Empty any old ash
- Old ash in the bottom of your grill can obstruct vents and make temperatures difficult to control.
- Put the ash in a bag and put it in the trash. To prevent accidental fires, the ash must be completely cool before emptying it from the grill.
-
Here’s How to Put Charcoal Out After Grilling Simply close the lid on your grill and shut the vents until the ash has completely cooled for at least 48 hours. Or, slowly pour water over the charcoal while stirring the charcoal, to eliminate the possibility of dormant embers re-igniting. Be careful — make sure you pour slowly to avoid creating hot steam.

Oil the Grill Grates
- Oil the grill grates by putting cooking oil on a folded paper towel. Grab the oiled paper towel with long-handled tongs and oil the grate thoroughly.
- Once your grill reaches the desired temperature, it’s time to add your favorite foods and start cooking. Have fun!

How to Gauge Grill Heat Without a Thermometer
Carefully hold your hand about 5” to 6” above the grate, and refer to the temperature settings below:
• High Heat (450° to 550°F):
2 to 4 seconds
• Medium Heat (350° to 450°F):
5 to 6 seconds
• Low Heat (250° to 350°F):
8 to 10 seconds
Make sure your clothing doesn’t touch the grate, and always move your hand away from the heat before you feel discomfort.
